Abstract

Inductive reasoning in explorative mathematical situations is relevant for knowledge generation – this holds for mathematicians as well as for students of all ages. In this paper we focus on the role of such experimental processes by synthesizing different perspectives: the perspective of mathematics, philosophy, sociology and educational psychology. Experimental processes in mathematics exhibit analogies but also discipline specific differences to experimental processes in the natural sciences.
