Meta-knowledge about mathematical argumentation and proof is a prerequisite for the development of proof competence. For instance, learners should know about the functions of proof and proving. In this article, several categorial systems for functions of proof and proving are discussed and a modified categorisation is presented. The applicability of this model is examined in a rating of functions of proof and proving distinguished by students in text productions in which they describe mathematical proof.
