Responsibilities and ethical standards

Editors

The editorial team administers the evaluation and publication processes while guaranteeing the quality and academic prestige of the journal in accordance with the applicable terms.

In the evaluation process, the editorial team is bound to the standards of impartiality and confidentiality.

Editorial board

The editorial board, composed of distinguished academics from national and international institutions, is the advisory body of the editorial team. Its members make recommendations as to the publication of the submitted articles and also write reviews themselves, while strictly following the standards of impartiality and confidentiality they are bound to.

Evaluation of the contributions:

Author responsibilities

1. Submit only original, unpublished articles.

2. Do not present the same article to other journals for publication at the same time.

3. Confirm that the presented evidence and results are the product of independent work. All published and unpublished work from other authors that has been used for the article must be identified.

4. Disclose all sources by way of correct and complete reference and citation. For this, authors should follow the guidelines specifying the formatting requirements (https://journals.sub.uni-hamburg.de/hup1/jbla/information/authors).

5. Indicate the copyright owner and the origin of all images included in the submitted text (pictures, graphs, maps, photographies, etc.). Authors are responsible for seeking copyright permission, if necessary.

6. Submit the contribution in line with the author guidelines (https://journals.sub.uni-hamburg.de/hup1/jbla/information/authors).

7. If one or both of the reviews recommend for the article to be changed and corrected, make the requested changes within 60 days. When sending the revised text, enclose a file specifying the changes that were made.

8. Transfer the publication rights to the journal as soon as the Jahrbuch / Anuario has confirmed the publication of the contribution.

9. Authors may reedit their articles after a period of two years from the publication in the journal, but they must state that the original version was published in the Jahrbuch für Geschichte Lateinamerikas / Anuario de Historia de América Latina.

Editors / Editorial board responsibilities

1. In the first step, all contributions are assessed by the journal’s editorial team, supported by members of the editorial board. In doing so, the journal determines whether the contribution meets the following criteria: a) It deals with a topic the Jahrbuch / Anuario specializes in, b) It makes a relevant contribution to historiography, and c) It follows the guidelines stipulated on the journal’s website.

2. All articles assessed positively by the editorial team and possibly the editorial board enter into the process of double blind peer review.

3. The peer review is carried out by two experts in the field, who are either members of the editorial board or recognized experts from national or international institutions. If the results of the two reviews differ significantly from each other, a third review will be requested.

4. Every evaluation is subject to the standards of impartiality and confidentiality.

5. The editorial team is in charge of either accepting or rejecting a contribution. It will make its decision solely on grounds of the two reviews.

6. The editorial team will inform the author about the result of the reviews within one week after receiving them.

7. Should a conflict of interest arise because the author is a member of the journal’s editorial board, the text will be reviewed by experts without any personal ties to members of the editorial board and without formal ties to the institution the author is a member of.

8. The editorial team and the editorial board reserve the right to retract already published articles in cases of scientific misconduct, e. g. the findings have previously been published elsewhere or the article constitutes plagiarism.
