Koeppen's Tauben im Gras as required high school reading material sparked a debate about teachers' competence in dealing with racism. The study examines the extent to which teacher beliefs are compatible with the requirements of racism-sensitive literature teaching. The evaluation of three guided interviews shows a preference for traditional, emotionally charged approaches to the text, while newly proposed analytical-distanced and power-conscious readings find little resonance.
