Abstract (english): Storytelling in the multimodal programming environment Scratch

The article ties in with the research on the Internet as a narrative environment (cf. Tophinke 2017; Schachtner 2016) and analyzes the programming environment Scratch as a medium of narration. The authors present the narrative possibilities of the multimodal tool and analyze two corpora of text-image-animations. It is shown that the code is a text constitutive element in these Scratch projects. However, the potential of the tool for multimodal narration is not nearly exhausted in the workshop projects examined. The focus, however, is on teaching programming skills rather than narrative skills. As a result, pupils who could have been telling stories episodically fall back on so-called isolated narration when programming with Scratch. The paper suggests ways to use the programming environment in the sense of the Creative Learning Spiral to build up narrative skills.
ER -
