Abstract (english): Conceptualisations of factual, counterfactual, and fictional discourse. A qualitative content analysis of contributions to an alternate world history forum

Alternate history has become a popular type of counterfactual thinking and construction of realities. Works of alternate history fiction are winning prizes, academic historians are engaging in allohistorical speculations – but there is also a large, lively, and creative alternate history online community. This study focuses on the conceptualisations of factual, counterfactual, and fictional discourse among the participants of the largest such forum, alternatehistory.com. In a Qualitative Content Analysis, three main categories of conceptualisations on different levels are built on the basis of survey data. Based on this frame, further discussion threads from the forum are coded and analysed. Preliminary findings are discussed in relation to an established model of gaining competence in discerning, understanding, and interpreting fiction.
}, number={2}, journal={MiDU - Medien im Deutschunterricht}, author={Carl, Mark-Oliver}, year={2021}, month={Dez.}, pages={1–15} }
