The Journal of Natural Resources and Development (JNRD) is a peer-reviewed, free of charge and open access journal that publishes papers related to natural resources management and the analysis of socio-ecological systems. It is devoted to the publication of scientific, technical and demand driven original research papers that address societal challenges under global change.

The aim of JNRD is to enhance our understanding of environmental, biophysical and socio-ecological systems, primarily in data-scarce regions. We promote the communication of research results and information that are useful for stakeholders and stimulate the dialogue between science, policy and society.

The JNRD publishes scientific articles related to natural resources management and the analysis of socio-ecological systems. Besides original research articles, we approach and work with that has resulted in negative findings like obtaining inadequate results when applying a method or problems while using specific datasets.

Next to original research articles, we also publish review papers, data sets, infographics and posters.

Topics within the scope of JNRD include:

  • Hydro-meteorological extremes and their impacts
  • Climate Change Adaptation
  • Integrated Water Resources Management
  • Land and Ecosystems
  • Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Management
  • (Agro)-Biodiversity
  • Sustainable Energy Systems
  • The Water – Energy – Food Security Nexus
  • Environmental Governance

JNRD in the context of the Centers for Natural Resources and Development (CNRD)

JNRD was established in 2011 by the international university network CNRD, (, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and DAAD Exceed Program. CNRD promotes academic exchange, research and cooperation related to natural resources management, with a focus on water and land resources, ecosystems and renewable energies. The network aims at providing science based information to societies — especially those living in data-scarce regions — to contribute to the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
